Iconography

Icons act as visual symbols to represent actions, features, or states. They're simple, functional, universally recognised, and informative.

Principles

Unified
Our icons are unified by their design. Inconsistencies, such as different shapes or thickness of the icon, lower the overall quality of the user experience. Only use icons from the AIA icon library.
Purposeful
Icons must always be useful, helping users navigate the UI and carry out tasks quickly and with ease. They shouldn’t be decorative.
Human
Icons must be easy to understand by people from different cultures and backgrounds. They should be simple and represent basic ideas. In general, add text to icons, unless they're universally recognised and can sit on their own without a label.

Icon categories

Three types of icons are used to communicate messages across our tools, each with variations based on use case.
Actionable icons
Actionable icons are simple symbols that represent actions and help users find their way around our platforms. These include icons for navigation, social media, and ratings. They can be used with text labels, on their own, or as interactive elements.
Status icon
Status icons are non-actionable icons that display a system status.
Product category icons
Our product category icons are AIA branded, bold, and eye catching. These icons should not be used for anything other than identifying a particular product.

Actionable icons

Our actionable icons are designed with simple and clean monochrome lines. The grid ensures consistent visual proportions.

Status icons

Status icons represent success, warning, error, and information. They're displayed using specific, defined colours.

Product category icons

Red illustrated icons help draw attention to our product offerings and are paired with text for context. These icons are used in product menus, banners, detail pages, and cards.

Use the same icon for products in the same category. For example, all health-related products should use the health icon.
